Founding and History

While new materials are continually invented, throughout the last century, and notably during the 1980’s, emerging manufacturing technologies created a flood of exciting new materials. But those who could profit most from this quantum change rarely maximized the creative potential of these swift changes.

As the mind-boggling array of new materials continued to proliferate, Material ConneXion® opened its doors in 1997. And how the world conducted business relating to materials was transformed forever.

Material ConneXion founder George M. Beylerian, a highly respected and seasoned creative visionary, foresaw how busy design professionals could benefit quickly from knowing about material innovation. Why not create access to the best of new materials, and make them available through one material resource?

Beylerian realized that the increase in tight design timetables and daunting work schedules would prevent professionals from doing extensive, meaningful creative exploration—the one process that has consistently inspired and revolutionized all realms of design.

Material ConneXion began to scout the world, discovering brand-new materials, which were evaluated and vetted by a seasoned jury of experts. Their task? To separate the best from the simply ordinary. The Library accepted innovative materials from around the world from small, individual companies in remote regions as well as new materials from major global manufacturers.
