Urban Outfitters Showroom 209 West 38th Street, NYC
Pompei A.D.
Introduction
This Pompei A.D. project for the Urban Outfitters Showroom represented a
complete renovation. This retailer features three urban house brands: Bulldog,
Free People and COOP. The original space was designed by Pompei A.D. 6 years ago.
Case Study
Urban Outfitters wanted their renovated showroom to reflect a contemporary
look yet still reflect the ambiance of their other stores throughout the
United States and Great Britain.
The renovation included a reconfiguration of the showroom, offices, lobby
area and the addition of a storage area. A basic design goal sought the
juxtaposition of soft and hard materials with color highlights to mirror the
diversity of fashion. The materials that were chosen for this project include
LUMAsiteŽ, R-Sand, brushed aluminum and translucent white Plexiglas. These
materials were adapted for various applications, such as the use of LUMAsiteŽ to
create a translucent horizontal membrane for partitions. This same product,
as a wall covering surface, when mounted on a turquoise painted wall, created
additional depth.
Conclusion
Specific materials can be diversified easily by inventing unique applications.
The Material ConneXion Library and its information on varied uses was the
springboard for adapting applications beyond the current, more typical uses.
