A mercerized cotton knit (88% cotton/12% polyurethane (PU)) coated fabric with a photochromic (UV-sensitive color-changing) coating applied. The UV-sensitive coating is designed to change color when exposed to the wavelengths found in sunlight. The mercerized interlock cotton knit and PU coating are used to provide softness, breathability, a non-plastic handfeel. The PU coating is formaldehyde-free and water-based. Two different pigments are mixed into a water-based, formaldehyde-free PU formulation, such that one pigment reacts to a certain wavelength and the other does not. The PU foam mixture is knife coated onto the fabric, causing the foam to adhere to the fabric. Then, the coated fabric is calendared to insure the coating and the fabric are permanently bonded together. The fabric is sold by the roll in 1.35 m (1.48 yd) widths. Available color changes include fluorescent pink to pink, fluorescent orange to yellow, yellow to green, and white to purple. Plain coating or polka dot pattern available. The base layer fabric can be changed to any other available fabric, including interlock, jacquard, jersey, rib, and fleece fabrics. Applications include apparel (jackets, t-shirts, skirts, tops, etc.), shoes, bags, and cases.
